Potatoes Become Aussie’s New Favorite Shopping Item

New Hort Innovation group’s annual statistics handbook for the horticulture industry’s 2020-21 season shows that 87% of Australian households bought potatoes at the supermarket, taking home an average of 1.7 kilograms per shopping trip.
The group’s data and insights chief, Adam Briggs, mentioned that consumers were not just buying spuds at the checkout but also were ordering them when eating out, Abc News wrote recently.
“Approximately 15% of the volume of the crop went to food service to cover things like your quick-service restaurants, and also you know other convenience options like catering as well,” Briggs added.
The Aussie cultivar growers were capable to meet consumers’ rising demand for spuds, with production volumes increased by 5% putting (an extra 70,000 tons of potatoes thrown onto the market). Briggs mentioned in the same respect that the value of potatoes exceeded USD800m, a first since Hort Innovation has been recording the data. ”That’s an increase of just over USD90m in the period.”
The above-mentioned statistics shows also that the majority of Australian-grown potatoes stayed in the country with only 3% sold to foreign clients (40,000 tons, valued at USD31m).
