Poland Reports Strongest Potato Crop in Years, Boosted by Ideal Weather

After two consecutive years of weak output, Poland’s potato production has rebounded sharply in 2025, with yields estimated to be around 17% higher than last season, according to FreshPlaza reporting from Polish packer Bugaj.
Łukasz Ostrowicz, member of Bugaj’s management board, said this season marked a clear recovery following several challenging years. Favourable rainfall and relatively mild summer temperatures supported high yields and good early-season quality. “This year’s potato production in Poland is significantly larger than in recent years,” he told FreshPlaza.
Preliminary assessments put national output at roughly 6.8 million tons, exceeding the five-year average. However, Ostrowicz noted that some growers achieved exceptional yields of up to 70 tons per hectare, suggesting the final figure could surpass 7.5 million tons. Such productivity, he added, also increases the risk of quality issues linked to bruising, soil contamination, and higher storage losses later in the season.
The initial months of the marketing year saw subdued demand as domestic supply remained abundant, but sales have since picked up slightly heading into autumn. Despite stronger availability, the surge in production has depressed prices to levels many growers find unsustainable. According to FreshPlaza, this year’s market dynamics have also been influenced by reduced incentives to grow alternative crops such as wheat, encouraging greater acreage for potatoes.
At the same time, Polish packers are adapting to evolving buyer expectations for more sustainable packaging formats. Bugaj has expanded its use of mono-material paper packs for certain product lines in response to rising retail and consumer demand for recyclable, plastic-free solutions.
To offset margin pressures in the table potato segment, the company is also increasing its output of peeled and pre-cooked potatoes. Exports of these convenience products to neighbouring markets have been growing steadily, reflecting rising consumer interest in ready-to-use formats.
