Ireland: Earlier Planted Potato Maincrop Continues to be Harvested
As the holiday season comes to an end, potato consumption and sales have recently increased in Ireland. The potato maincrop that was sown earlier is still being harvested.
“There are many reports that numbers are disappointing, and yields will be reduced, especially on later planted crops. Quality is reported to be very good,” according to the latest IFA potato report.
Except for the western half of the U.K., conditions are currently extremely dry, necessitating irrigation to both elevate and pre-burn down dry matter levels.
“Eary plantings are being lifted into store, with good yields but many later planted crops continue to struggle despite regular irrigation. Unirrigated late-planted crops are in many cases poor. D.M. levels are rising ‘quite quickly’ and high tuber number is common,” the IFA potato experts concluded.
