U.K.: Potato Lifting Conditions Are Still Challenging

After severe rains in the southern and western regions of the U.K., potato lifting conditions are still challenging.
Some crops stored since the rain began are reportedly beginning to exhibit breakdown issues, such as wet rot and pink rot. Some stores on long-term contracts will need to move earlier than anticipated, and stores were unloaded. Last week’s intense rain in some parts of Europe also hampered liftings.
In Ireland, midterm break this week will temporarily disrupt consumption with the food service sector seeing a boost in demand.
“Overall, consumption this year has been buoyant, as consumers realize the value for money that potatoes offer. Crops continue to be lifted across the country as they become fit. The effect of late-planted crops is evident now as yields are much lower on these crops,” the IFA potato experts concluded.
