Lamb Weston / Meijer Opts for More Sustainable Transport of Fries
Lamb Weston / Meijer (LW/M) is collaborating with logistics partner Visbeen to take another step to enhance the sustainable transport of its products. The switch from diesel to LNG (Liquefied Natural Gas) for the LHV shuttle that travels back and forth 24/7 between the factory in Oosterbierum (the Netherlands), with its non-stop production process, and the coldstore in Bergen op Zoom, will result in an annual saving of more than 31,000 kg of CO2.
In close collaboration with logistics partner Visbeen, the average number of road kilometres per ton of transported end product has been reduced by nearly 6% (from 459 km to 432 km per ton) via further optimization of routes, over the past two years. Furthermore, transport via water and rail has been expanded.
“It’s vital that we have chain partners willing to work with us towards a climate-neutral future. That includes not only the sustainable cultivation of potatoes and the production process, but certainly also the transport of our products to customers,” explains Jolanda Soons, who is responsible for the sustainability program at LW/M.
“Our current decision for LNG is initiated by our belief that a new mindset is required. With a view to our sizeable annual kilometres, this allows us to considerably reduce our CO2 emissions”, says shareholder Adrie Visbeen.
This Scania R410 has an electric cooling unit for both the truck and trailer, with power generated via the truck’s gearbox. That increases the CO2 saving even further.
The LHV will be driven according to a smart planning schedule, so that only three drivers are required for two vehicles.
