Northern Europe Potato Output Climbs 10% as Retail Trend Shifts to Smaller Packs

Retail demand for potatoes remains steady across key markets, with at-home consumption reported as stable. Industry feedback indicates a continued shift toward smaller pack formats, a trend that is reducing overall volumes sold even as consumer purchasing frequency holds firm. Pre-pack quality material is seeing particularly strong demand, supported by reports of quality variation in certain supply channels.
The latest assessment from the North-western European Potato Growers (NEPG) shows production in the region is expected to reach 27.2 million tonnes, representing a 10% increase on last year. According to the group, this uplift is driven by a 7% expansion in planted area and a 5% increase in yields, the latter attributed to early planting windows and favourable growing conditions.
While the higher output eases some supply pressure for processors and retailers, market participants note that pack-size trends and quality segmentation continue to play an outsized role in determining availability for specific categories.
