The British Frozen Potato Market Volume Reached 1.4m Tons in 2022
Frozen potato products are in high demand in the U.K. According to Statista, the British frozen potato market volume reached 1.4m tons last year, with 495,000 tons going to the food service sector.
Domestic production (UK for the UK) contributed to 660 tons (47%), with an additional 740 tons imported to meet demand.
According to Mintel data, there has been an increase in value over the last year, with food price inflation playing a substantial role. For the 52 weeks ending June 11, 2023, the value of frozen potato products was GBP993,962, compared to GBP818,567 during the same period in 2022.
“Frozen potatoes are pure gold for food service. Ever versatile, they provide menu inspiration, customer satisfaction, and a healthy profit margin. And with the right product, they suit all skill levels in the kitchen,” Pete Evans, Lamb Weston’s UK marketing manager, said, cited by Frozen FoodsBiz.
With simple enhancements like spices and oils, frozen potato products provide the food service industry with additional earnings. From rosemary, peri, sriracha, or harissa sea salt to truffle or chili oil, operators may quickly add value to their menu pleasers without having to acquire several components. Menus with special flavors and additions will also command greater pricing.
“Convenience will be driving trends as our busy lives mean we look for good and easy products to cook. However, at a time of high cost of living, frozen potato products also offer great food at great value prices. Consumers eat and only use what they want when they want. The rest can be stored for a long time and therefore do not go to waste,” Rupert Ashby, chief executive of the British Frozen Food Federation, summed up.
