European Processing Potato Varieties Yields ‘Around Average’

Test digs on processing potato varieties show yields are currently around average for the time of year but there is very little growth taking place and senescence (vine death) is advanced in Europe.
“The main growth period for the processing crop is during August and this year ‘it is just not happening’,” according to the latest IFA potatoes report. “The drought in Northern Europe continues although low-pressure systems are lurking which may bring some rain next week and much cooler weather.”
Growth rates in the UK have slowed, even on irrigated crops, and some ‘very average’ maincrop yields are expected. Irrigation restrictions are currently in effect, and reservoirs are low, with available water frequently being held back to aid lifting. Many crops have reached a “point of no return,” where rain could cause more harm than good.
Sales in Ireland performed better than expected during last week’s heat wave, according to reports, with stocks moving steadily. Foodservice sector sales continue to rise. Drought was a major concern for growers last week, and while recent rain was welcome, it did not reach all areas. Some areas in the southwest have yet to receive precipitation, which will almost certainly have an impact on maincrop Rooster yields.
