U.S. frozen potato exports grow in value but fall behind in volumes

U.S. frozen potato exports from July to September 2022 decreased by around -4% in volume but increased by 13% in value over the same three-month period in 2021. All forms of potato exports share a greater value number when compared to volume, which reflects inflation and price rises around the world.
Frozen cargo volumes fell to China (-38%), Myanmar (-59%), and Taiwan (-7%), to name a few countries. Despite a decrease in volume overall, frozen shipments to foreign markets saw some growth, particularly in Saudi Arabia (+24%) and the United Arab Emirates (+134%).
The number of U.S. fresh potato exports, which includes table stock potatoes and processing chipping potatoes, decreased this quarter by -15% in comparison to July to September 2021. However, the value of fresh shipping value increased by 7%. Fresh exports increased by about 7% to some important countries, including Mexico. Now that fresh American potatoes are permitted to cross the 26-kilometer border, this export figure for Mexico includes deliveries to the interior of the nation. Additionally, fresh shipments climbed by over 50% to the Central American region and by 180% to South Korea.
Despite a limited supply, U.S. dehydrated potato exports increased by 8% in value and 1.4% in volume from this quarter in 2021. Shipments of dehydrated potatoes saw significant increases in Malaysia (124% rise) and Thailand (61% increase). Shipments of dehydrated potatoes fell to several markets, including Taiwan (-78%), South Korea (-50%), and Japan (-29%).
Even though reports from all over the world show a significant demand for American potato goods, several markets indicate difficulties in ensuring a steady supply of American potatoes.
Food service operators in South Korea, on the other hand, are searching for promotional support to introduce new menu items with American potatoes as importers there report that the supply of American potatoes is now stable. The retail and catering industries in Myanmar have resumed regular business operations. Importers in Myanmar indicated that a large number of eateries have switched back to using only U.S. potatoes.
